For times when earthquakes or other large-scale disasters strike, Komatsu has formulated criteria for providing rapid and appropriate assistance to the affected areas through cooperation with its Group companies near the disaster area. Komatsu's activities to support relief and reconstruction include the lending out of construction equipment free of charge and the contribution of monetary donations.
Since 2003, as part of its social contribution activities and with the Japanese government’s support, Komatsu has developed and tested demining machines for anti-personnel landmines in Cambodia and Afghanistan as well as provided technical trainings to staff members of local non-governmental organizations. A Komatsu demining machine has been deployed by a local NGO in Afghanistan since September 2007.
January 2008, Komatsu and Japan Mine Action Service, a nonprofit organization of Japan, signed an agreement to jointly demine anti-personnel landmines in the contaminated regions and reconstruct local communities after demining. Komatsu positions community reconstruction which begins with demining as one of its core activities of social contribution. In addition to continuing this activity, Komatsu hopes to expand its efforts to other areas by collaborating with other companies, NGOs, governments, international organizations and local people.

Each business unit makes financial contributions to the Japanese Red Cross Society, the Akai Hane ("red feather") community chest fundraising campaign, and more. Also, through the company's intranet, Komatsu provides information on welfare assistance activities to its employees.
With a view to supporting employees' social contribution activities, Komatsu allows its workers to take short or extended leaves of absence for volunteer activities, and for activities of particular prominence the company awards official commendation.
